　経済発注量(EOQ)モデルが「需要が既知で一定」という仮定をおいていた. これに対して, [[動的ロットサイズ決定問題]] (dynamic lot sizing problem)では, 需要は既知であるものの, 期によって需要量が異なることを許す. それゆえ本モデルは動的EOQとも呼ばれ, また, ワグナーとウィッティン(Wagner and Whitin)が考案したことから [1] , [[ワグナー・ウィッティンモデル]]の名で呼ばれることもある. なお, MRP計算において, 期別の正味所要量から品目ごとにロットを編成し計画オーダを作る問題は, 動的ロットサイズ決定問題にほかならない.

　ここで, 期間の長さ <math>T\, </math> の計画を立案することを考える. 各期 <math>t\, </math> の需要 <math>d_{t}( > 0) \, </math> が既知, 各期 <math>t\, </math> の製品1個当りの発注費用が <math>c_{t}\, </math> , 発注量に無関係に1回の発注に対する各期 <math>t\, </math> の発注費用が <math>K_{t}\, </math> , 製品1個を1期間保持するための各期 <math>t\, </math> の在庫保管費用が <math>h_{t} \, </math>, <math>t=0 \, </math> における初期在庫量を0とする. また, リードタイムは0すなわち発注と同時に納入され, 納入は期首にされる. 需要に対する品切れは許されない.

ここで, <math>y_{t}\, </math> を <math>t\, </math> 期の発注量, <math>I_{t} \, </math> を各期の期末在庫量としたときに, 総費用を最小化するような各期の発注量を決定する問題は, 以下のように定式化できる.

　次に, 本問題の最適解を得ることを考えよう. 本問題の最適解を得る上で, 「最適な発注方策は, [[ゼロ在庫発注方策]], すなわち

　この性質を使い, 動的計画法によって最適解を見つけることを考える. <math>1 \leq i \leq j \leq T + 1\, </math> について, <math>l_{ij}\, </math> を, <math>i \, </math> 期から, <math>i+1,\ldots,j-1 \, </math>期までの需要を満足するために <math>t\, </math> 期においてかかる費用とすれば,

　ちなみに, <math> l_{ij} \, </math>を点 <math> i \, </math> から点 <math> j \, </math> への枝の長さと考えたとき, 本問題はネットワークにおける最短路問題とみなすことができる(図1). 点 <math>1 \, </math> から点 <math>T+1 \, </math> への最短路の長さは, 1期から <math> T \, </math> 期までの需要を満足する上での最小費用となる.

　動的計画法によって最適解を得る際の計算の手間は <math> {\rm O}(T^2) \, </math> であるが, 最近の研究では <math> {\rm O}(T) \, </math> の手間で最適解を得られるアルゴリズムが開発されている [2]. また, 近似解を得るための種々のヒューリスティック解法が提案されている [5].

　動的ロットサイズ決定問題は, 発注量や期末在庫量に上限がある場合, 品切れを許し品切れ時の需要がバックオーダーされる場合, 多段階の場合など, ざまざまな拡張がなされている [2] [4].
